I got into Omaha from Peoria around 12:30am, and promptly passed out until my dad woke me up at 3:45am. Our flight left at 6am so we wanted to get to the airport by 4:30. When we checked in with US Airways, we found that the last leg of our flight was through United, so we could either wait and checkin when we arrived in San Francisco, or wait in the United line in Omaha to get our tickets. The line was HUGE so we decided to wait. The flight to Phoenix was uneventful and we had a three hour layover, so we decided to go outside the security checkpoint to get some food. Then we forgot about the time change and thought we had to rush back when we still had another hour. My mom also thought she lost her ID, so we had some panicked calls to my dad and Grant (the TSA agent!) to see what we should do before she found it again. After all that excitement, we were worn out on our next flight. Arriving in San Francisco, we had to leave security again to get to our next gate...the United flights were in a different terminal. Just outside the checkpoint was a machine that let you check in for multiple airlines, so we got our tickets there. But our seats weren't together! We decided to resolve that at the gate, but there was a lot of construction at the airport and we couldn't figure out how to get to the other terminal. We ended up walking outside, down the STREET (the sidewalk was roped off), to get to our terminal. The security line wasn't very long, but it was moving verrrry slowly. Our flight was already boarding by the time we made it through. On the plane, we were luckily able to switch seats with some other people so we could sit together. Whew! We meant to eat in San Francisco, but had run out of time, so by the time they started offering food on the plane, we gobbled down a turkey sandwich and a cheese sampler. The flight had a nice tailwind, so we actually got into Maui an hour earlier than expected. Very nice! We got our luggage and rental car, and made it to the hotel with no problems. Then we decided to run out to the grocery store to pick up some food. We tried to find Foodland first, supposedly only a mile away, but my GPS took us into a neighborhood, so we ended up going back to the Safeway in Lahaina. Safeway was INSANE. It was so packed! Hawaii also apparently has a 'no plastic bag' policy now, so there were signs everywhere saying you had to bring your own grocery bags. Luckily, they had reusable/recyclable paper bags they gave us. We got about a 20% discount thanks to the Safeway card my boss loaned me. Sweeeet. After that the exhaustion was really starting to get to us so we drove through the McDonald's next door to our hotel on the way back. We were both so tired that the greasy food made us sick later that night, but we didn't let it bother us. |
